Have you been feeling the heat this summer? Has your electricity bill been feeling it too? Fortunately there are a number of A/C alternatives out there, because what’s cooler than saving money while being eco-friendly!
Beat the Heat with Indoor Plants
Not only do they look great around the apartment, plants can also actually keep the air around them cool. When plants photosynthesize they consume water and sunlight. Taking in this energy, in this case heat, means a cooler home, and a lush, indoor oasis!
Be Sun Smart
The sun is your best bud at the beach, but not such a welcome guest in your apartment in summer. Make sure windows facing east are shaded in the morning, and west-facing windows are shaded in the afternoon. Blackout curtains can help prevent heat from entering. Your neighbors might think you’re harboring fugitives but it’s a small price to pay, reputation-wise and Con Ed-wise.
If You Can’t Stand the Heat, Get Out of the Kitchen
Baking foods is a sure-fire way to also bake your apartment. Just the thought of standing over a hot stove in summer makes us sweat, so make summer the season of salads! Fill the fridge with lettuce, vegetables, fruits, cheese, dips, cold cuts, juices and iced teas.
We’d Like to Thank Our Fans
Modern ceiling fans are energy efficient and most have a little switch to reverse their direction. Make sure your fans are going counter clockwise in the summer to circulate cool air. You can also place a bottle of frozen water in front of your table fan to get cold air circulating.
Brave a Cold Bath
This doesn’t sound inviting, but it really works! Run a lukewarm bath halfway so you’re not jumping into a freezing tub, and then gradually add cold water until you’re in a mostly cold bath. You’ll stay cool for a long time and will avoid a humid bathroom from a hot shower.
